But can water perfection really be achieved and maintained all summer long? The answer is yes.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we believe that your swimming pool should be a vital centerpiece for gathering, relaxing, and enjoying time with friends and family rather than a source of endless maintenance woes. The Delicate Balance of Pool Chemicals

The foundation of a flawless swimming pool experience lies in the delicate balance of water chemistry. Pool maintenance is not just about splashing in some chlorine and calling it a day. It involves a carefully crafted combination of chemicals, each playing an important role.

There is chlorine’s bacteria-busting power and sodium carbonate’s pH-perfecting prowess, as well as the unsung hero of the pool world: algaecide. This weekly warrior is your best defense against the green invaders that thrive in the summer heat. With our BioGuard® pool chemicals, you can rest assured that your pool is in the best hands. There is a formula for each pool and climate, and at Goodall Pools & Spas, we know how to find that formula.

Professional Pool Opening vs. DIY: What’s Best for You? https://goodallpools.com/professional-pool-opening-vs-diy/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=7458 Spring is in the air, and that means one thing for pool owners: it’s time to think about pool opening!

But here’s the million-dollar question: should you roll up your sleeves and do it yourself, or should you call in the pros? We’ve seen it all at Goodall Pools & Spas, and we’re here to dive into the nitty-gritty of DIY vs. professional pool opening.

The DIY Pool Opening Dive

There’s a certain charm in doing things yourself. You get to bask in the glory of a job well done, not to mention the potential savings. But before you dive headfirst into DIY pool opening, let’s consider what it entails.

First, you’ll need the right pool chemicals to get your water sparkling clean. This means testing your water and balancing the pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels.

Then there’s the physical labor — removing the cover, cleaning it, and getting all the winter gunk out of your pool. It’s not rocket science, but it does require time, effort, and a good portion of elbow grease. And if your water is green from algae, it could take quite a bit of time and attention.

The Polish of Professional Pool Opening

Now, let’s talk about bringing in the big guns.

Hiring a professional pool opening service means you can kick back, relax, and leave the heavy lifting to the experts. The Goodall Pools & Spas team has the know-how and tools to get your pool ready in no time.

We’ll handle everything from removing the cover to installing ladders and handrails and getting your equipment up and running. And if we spot any issues, like a leak or a faulty pump, we know how to fix those too. It’s a hassle-free way to ensure your pool is in tip-top shape for the season.

Professional Pool Opening vs. DIY: What's Best for You?

The Professional Pool-Opening Cost Conundrum

One of the biggest factors in the DIY vs. professional debate is cost.

Of course, doing it yourself can save you some bucks upfront. But consider this: if you make a mistake with the chemicals or miss an important step, you could end up with bigger problems down the line. And those problems usually come with a heftier price tag.

On the other hand, hiring a professional pool company might cost more initially, but you’re paying for peace of mind. Plus, with regular pool service, you can keep your pool in pristine condition all season long, which can save you money in the long run.

Professional Pool Opening vs. DIY: What's Best for You?

The Pool Opening Verdict

You could cut your own hair, but you use a local professional for that. What about your own plumbing, your own electric work, or fixing your own car?

Most people leave those things to the professionals as well. Of course, opening your pool doesn’t have the same complexity and sophistication as those examples, but shouldn’t your family’s backyard gathering place get the same consideration?

So, what’s best for you? If you’re a hands-on person with time to spare and a knack for following instructions, DIY pool opening might be right up your alley. But if you’d rather not deal with the hassle and you want to ensure that your pool is opened correctly, professional pool opening is the way to go.

5 Fantastic Pool Closing Tips to Save You Time and Money https://goodallpools.com/5-pool-closing-tips-save-time-money/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=6220 Alas, pool closing time is approaching. Not only must we bid farewell to the sweet days of summer spent splashing around, but we must close our beautiful swimming pools.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we have assembled five fantastic tips to help you close your pool like a pro and save some precious time and money in the process!

1. Proper Planning Prevents Pool Predicaments

Before diving into the pool closing extravaganza, it’s crucial to have a well-thought-out plan. Proper planning prevents predicaments.

The first step in your plan should be to clean your pool like you’re prepping for a pool party – removing debris, leaves, and any lurking algae. A sparkling pool is a happy pool!

2. Balancing Act: The Pool Chemistry Edition

Chemistry — the magic behind keeping your pool water pristine and inviting!

To ensure your pool stays in tip-top shape during its winter hibernation, balance those chemical levels like a maestro conducting a symphony.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we’ve got the inside scoop on maintaining the perfect pH between 7.4 and 7.6, alongside the ideal total alkalinity. It’s like a chemical tango — balanced and harmonious!

3. Shock It, Don’t Stop It!

No, we’re not talking about shocking your pool with scandalous stories — but a little pool shock treatment can indeed do wonders!

Shocking your pool ensures that all lingering contaminants take a backseat, allowing your pool to hibernate without fear of unwanted visitors like algae. Say goodbye to the green monsters and hello to a serene pool come spring!

4. Cozy Up: Winter Chemicals Are Your Pool’s Best Friend

Just like a warm blanket on a chilly night, winterizing chemicals are your pool’s best friend during the colder months.

Adding algaecide can help keep your pool water crystal clear and algae-free throughout winter. Think of it as giving your pool a snug winter sweater — cozy and protected!

5. Cover Your Pool: The Ultimate Pool Blanket Party

Last but certainly not least, give your pool the ultimate “blanket party” with a high-quality cover

A well-fitted pool cover not only keeps debris and leaves out but also retains heat in the water, preventing unnecessary evaporation. Goodall Pools & Spas has the perfect pool covers for your beloved aquatic haven!

The Most Magnificent Way to Extend Your Swim Season https://goodallpools.com/the-most-magnificent-way-to-extend-your-swim-season/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/?p=6080 What if you could extend your swim season deep into autumn and even start it a little earlier?

Some say the seasons are the best thing about living in the Northeast. Others say the seasons are the worst thing about living in the Northeast.

We love the seasons! But when autumn comes calling and it gets to be closing time for the swimming pool, well, we at Goodall Pools & Spas can understand both sides.

We offer two fantastic pool heating options: gas pool heaters and heat pumps. Let’s dive into the details and find the perfect solution for your pool!

Gas Pool Heaters: Quick Heating but Not Energy Efficient

Our gas pool heaters, such as the Pentair MasterTemp® and Hayward® Universal H-Series, are known for their ability to heat water quickly using gas or propane. They are perfect for those moments when you want to raise the water temperature for a specific event or during a few weeks in spring and fall.

However, gas pool heaters are not the most energy-efficient way to extend your swim season, leading many customers to turn them off when not in use due to higher operating costs.

Heat Pumps: The Energy-Efficient Choice to Extend Your Swim Season

Heat pumps, like the Pentair UltraTemp® and Hayward® HeatPro®, use electricity to operate, making them a more economical choice to extend your swim season.

Though they may have a slightly higher upfront cost, they offer significant energy savings and efficiency. Some electric companies and manufacturers even provide rebates for choosing heat pumps over traditional heaters.

The only downside to heat pumps is that they take longer to heat the water, gradually raising the temperature over a few days. However, once the desired temperature is reached, the heat pump helps maintain it throughout the summer, similar to how a home heat pump operates.

Personal Preference and Available Resources

Choosing between heat pumps and heaters to extend your swim season depends on your personal preferences and available resources. If you only want to heat your water during a couple of key points during the year, like for a party, or a weekend in early spring, and you have access to gas or propane, gas pool heaters may suit your needs.

On the other hand, if you value long-term energy efficiency and cost savings, heat pumps are the way to go. They provide gradual heating, resulting in a more environmentally friendly approach while maintaining your pool temperature throughout the season.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we take pride in offering a wide range of pool heating options to cater to your needs. Whether you prefer the quick heating of gas pool heaters or the energy-efficient performance of heat pumps, rest assured that your swimming experience will always be enjoyable.

The Ultimate Swim Season Experience

Imagine the delight of lounging in your pool, sipping on a refreshing drink, as the autumn leaves gently fall around you. Thanks to the incredible pool heating options offered by Goodall Pools & Spas, you can extend your swim season and make this daydream your reality

With gas pool heaters and heat pumps at your disposal, you have the power to transform your swim season into an unforgettable experience. Embrace the changing seasons and extend your swim season with a warm, inviting pool that beckons you to dive in no matter the weather.

Extend your poolside gatherings, host unforgettable pool parties, and create cherished memories with your loved ones, all year round. The magic of an extended swim season awaits you, and with our expert guidance, you’ll find the perfect heating solution to suit your needs.

So, dive into the joy of an endless swim season, courtesy of Goodall Pools & Spas — your partner in making every moment in the pool count! We have been in business for over 60 years and are proud to offer five store locations in Pennsylvania. Our team of experienced professionals is committed to providing our customers with the highest quality products and services available on the market today.

Swimming Pool Party Maintenance: What to Do? https://goodallpools.com/swimming-pool-party-maintenance-what-to-do/ Mon, 05 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-swimming-pool-party-maintenance/ After the swimming, splashing, and all-around fun is over, it’s crucial to take steps to maintain your swimming pool. Otherwise, your pool may become more of an environmental hazard than the scene of the party. Here, we discuss some of the essential steps you need to take to ensure your swimming pool remains healthy, functional, and party-ready.

Clean the Swimming Pool Area

The first thing to do is to clean up the pool area. This involves picking up any litter, emptying trash cans, and sweeping the area. If you have outdoor furniture, make sure to clean it as well. Use a mild detergent and a sponge to clean chairs and tables. If your pool area is equipped with a grill, make sure to clean it too. It’s essential to clean up any spills and food particles to prevent bacteria from forming.

Remember, what surrounds your pool can make its way into your pool. If you skip cleaning the party spills, the grime and bacteria that grow from them will hitch a ride on your swimmers at a later date and end up (you guessed it) in your pool.

Remove Debris from the Pool

During a pool party, it’s not uncommon for debris like leaves, bugs, and other debris to accumulate in the pool. You must remove any debris from the pool to prevent it from clogging the pool’s filtration system. Use a leaf skimmer to remove fallen debris from the surface of the water. You can also use a pool vacuum to clean the bottom of the pool.

Check the Chemical Levels

One of the most important steps in maintaining a swimming pool is checking the chemical levels. Chemicals like pH balancers are necessary to keep the water clean and clear. After a pool party, the chemical levels may be off. Therefore, you should test the water to make sure the levels are within the recommended range. You can use a pool testing kit for this step. Then, add chemicals as needed to bring the levels back to normal.

Run the Filter System

After a pool party, it’s crucial to run the pool’s filtration system for at least eight hours. This ensures that the water is circulated and filtered properly. The filter system helps to remove any impurities from the water, including bacteria and other contaminants. Running the filtration system also helps to distribute the chemicals evenly throughout the pool.

Shock the Swimming Pool

Another critical step in maintaining a pool after a party is shocking the pool. This involves adding a generous dose of chlorine to the water, killing any bacteria and other microorganisms that may have accumulated during the party. Shocking the pool also helps to restore the chemical balance of the water. You should shock the pool at least once a week, especially during the summer months when the pool is used more frequently.

Maintain the Water Level

Between all the splashing and swimming, the water level in your pool can drop significantly during a pool party. It’s important to maintain the water level to ensure the pool is functioning correctly. You can add supplemental water to the pool using a garden hose until the water level is within the recommended range. The water level should be at least halfway up the skimmer to ensure proper filtration.

Swimming Pool Maintenance in Central Pennsylvania

Remember, a pool is only as fun as it is safe and healthy. So follow these maintenance steps after your pool party, and you can enjoy your swimming pool all summer long without any issues.

When the time comes to maintain your pool, Contact us at Goodall Pools & Spas or visit one of our five locations. We provide a comprehensive array of pool maintenance equipment and BioGuard® Chemicals to help keep your pool sanitary and performing its best.

Is Your Swimming Pool Ready for Summer? https://goodallpools.com/is-your-swimming-pool-ready-for-summer/ Mon, 15 May 2023 16:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-is-your-swimming-pool-ready-for-summer/ Finally! We’ve turned to the page in the calendar where we can see “Pool Opening” scribbled in. However, before jumping into the water, it’s important to ensure that your swimming pool is ready for all that fun in the sun.

So how do you make your pool ready for summer? At Goodall Pools & Spas, we have it down to a science.

How to Open Your Swimming Pool

Think about how you prepare to go for a dip in your swimming pool. You put on your bathing suit, apply plenty of sunscreen, and load yourself with all the necessary accessories for fun and relaxation (e.g., towels, floats, beverages, etc.). Just as you prepare yourself to go into the pool, you need to prepare your pool to go into the swim season.

Here are the key steps to effectively opening your pool for the summer.

Step 1: Clean and Remove the Pool Cover

The first step in preparing your swimming pool for the summer season is to remove any water or debris that may have accumulated on your pool cover. Then, carefully remove the cover and store it properly to prolong its life.

Step 2: Clean the Pool

The next step is to clean the pool thoroughly. This includes removing any leaves, dirt, and debris that may have accumulated in the pool over the winter months. You can do this using a pool leaf skimmer. It’s also important to brush the walls and floor of the pool to remove any algae that may have formed.

Step 3: Check and Clean the Pool Equipment

Once the pool is clean, inspect the pool equipment to ensure that everything is in working order. This includes the pool pump, filter, and heater. You should also check the pool’s water level and adjust it as necessary. Turn on the pool pump and make sure everything is running properly before adding any chemicals.

Step 4: Shock the Pool

Shocking the pool involves adding a large amount of chlorine to the water to kill any bacteria or algae that may have formed. Normally during pool season, this should be done after balancing the pool water and should be done in the evening or at night when the sun is not shining. This allows chlorine to work more effectively.

However, for pool opening, we recommend you add a double dose of shock to your pool, then let your water circulate for 48 hours before adding any balancing chemicals. Balancing chemicals settle in layers in your water throughout the winter, and it can take a few days to get them to mix into the cold water for accurate testing and to see what you really need to add.

Step 4: Balance the Pool Water

After 2 days of the pool water circulating non-stop, it’s time to balance the water. Test for pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels. If the levels are not within the recommended range, add chemicals to achieve the proper balance. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when adding chemicals to the pool.

Step 6: Run the Pool Pump

After adding your large dose of balancing chemicals at the beginning of the season, you should continue to run the pool pump for 24 – 48 hours to ensure that the water is circulated properly. This will also help to distribute the chemicals evenly throughout the pool.

Stocking Up on Chemicals

One of the most important aspects of preparing your swimming pool for the summer season is ensuring that you have the necessary chemicals on hand. This includes chlorine, pH balancers, algaecide, and shock treatments. It’s important to purchase high-quality chemicals to ensure that they are effective and safe to use.

  • Chlorine is perhaps the most important chemical for keeping your pool clean and safe. It kills bacteria and other harmful organisms that may be present in the water. You should test the chlorine levels regularly to ensure that they are within the recommended range.
  • pH balancers are also important for maintaining the right balance of acidity in the pool water. If the pH levels are too high or too low, it can cause skin and eye irritation and can also damage the pool equipment.
  • Algaecide is used to prevent the growth of algae in the pool. Algae can make the water cloudy and can also be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
  • Shock treatments are used to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms that may be present in the water. Shocking the pool should be done regularly, especially after heavy use or after heavy rainfall.

Invest in a Quality Pool Cover Before Winter https://goodallpools.com/invest-in-a-quality-pool-cover-before-winter/ Mon, 17 Oct 2022 16:00:00 +0000 https://goodallpools.com/https-goodallpools-com-invest-in-a-quality-pool-cover-before-winter/ What does a pool cover have to do with a pool opening? Isn’t that something you think of in conjunction with a pool closing? Yes, indeed. However, you should know that your pool cover is just as critical to a successful pool opening as a closing.

At Goodall Pools & Spas, we’ve spent nearly 60 years servicing pools (many of which we’ve built ourselves). In that time, we’ve seen many customers breathe a sigh of relief when they reopen their pool in the spring. Others screech at the sight. Our advice is this: if you want to fall into the first category, invest in a good pool cover.

Why is a pool cover so important now for next year’s season?

You’ve cleaned your pool for the last time this year. The water level has been adjusted properly. And the winterization chemicals are in their place keeping the organic matter at bay. Now, it’s time for the finishing touch: fastening a reliable safety cover over your favorite swimming hole.

“Why is this step so important?” you may ask. “Why not just drain the pool and give it a solid scrub down once spring rolls around? That eliminates the need to spend money on a safety cover.” First and foremost, don’t drain the pool.

The purpose of keeping a certain level of water in the pool during the colder months is to keep the pool walls in contact with the winterization chemicals that have dissolved in the water. Without taking this step, your pool structure becomes the best hangout spot in town for bacteria and other organic matter that leads to stubborn algae. In short, you end up with a runaway swamp that compromises the pool’s integrity and shortens its lifespan.

It’s decided, then. The water stays in the pool! But winterization chemicals alone aren’t enough to keep algae from rearing its head eventually. That’s where the pool cover comes in. A sturdy, expansive cover blocks debris like dirt, plant matter, and the heaviest of hitters, snow, from entering the pool. As a result, your winterized pool water can continue doing its job uninterrupted, and you’ll breathe that satisfying sigh of relief when winter thaws.

What type of pool cover is best for winter use?

If you ask a Goodall team member about how to cover your pool in winter, you’re likely to hear the words “safety cover.” More specifically, we set our customers up with customized safety covers from Merlin Industries, cut specifically to match the shape of their pools.

These safety covers are made from either solid vinyl or mesh. As such, they’re engineered to hold up under a heavy load. In fact, they’re called safety covers because they help prevent people and pets from falling into the pool when it’s not being used.

This composition is what makes safety covers great protection against debris and snow accumulation in the wintertime. Whereas a typical winter cover (which is a tarp-like cover) may sag under the weight of melting snow, Merlin’s covers do well at limiting any puddling you may encounter when removal time comes. Additionally, safety covers are anchored into the concrete, whereas traditional winter covers are only held on with the weight of water bags.

So put the final seal on your pool with a safety cover before winter. Your pool will return the favor with cleaner water and, thus, less effort on your part when reopening time arrives.
